Update on DREAM ACT by VP of USSA Victor Sanchez
Here’s a quick brief on what’s going down FYI,
As mentioned, a cloture vote is expected sometime tomorrow morning for the DREAM Act. The cloture vote—for explanation’s sake—is a procedural vote that will allow debate on the actual bill (the version the House passed about a week ago) come early next week—most likely even Sunday. Majority leader has invoked a procedural tactic to limit amendments to the bill, sparing it from changes that might completely alter the core of the legislation. This, unfortunately has become a source of republican opposition. Remember, our mission is to pass this version of the DREAM Act because it’s core principles still very much align with what we as an organization stand for.
The key number is 60. Currently as it stands the level of support is unclear moving forward, but we have proven effective in the tactics we have been using to create pressure in swinging crucial votes. USSA is targeting Senator George LeMiemux (R-FL), a swing vote whose support could mean the difference between the DREAM Act passing and failing. As you all are aware of, it is go time. The is the furthest the DREAM Act has gone in the past two years, and to make it into a scenario where it can actually be voted for passage will draw us one step closer to making this dream a reality.
Earlier, Lindsay reached out to you all with steps to take moving forward:
Call 202-224-3041 for Senator George LeMiemux’s office.
Once connected to his office, say: “My name is _____ and I’m a student with the United States Student Association, which represents over 4 million students nationwide, including students in Florida. I urge Senator LeMiemux to vote ‘yes’ on the DREAM Act because everyone deserves the opportunity to achieve the American Dream through a college education or military service. Thank you.”
Post on Senator LeMieux’s facebook wall by visiting http://www.facebook.com/pages/George-LeMieux/153771371660?ref=ts, “liking” his page, and posting: Senator LeMiemux, please vote YES on the DREAM Act; everyone deserves the chance to achieve the American Dream through a college education or military service. Thank you!
